In different organ systems, the epithelium has a characteristic apical-basal cell polarity. In addition, the epithelial cell has a distinct morphology and shape of which a slight deviation from normalcy can result in an asymmetric distribution and localization of the apical plasma membrane along with the adherent junctions to the daughters of a mitotically dividing cell (Nelson 2003a, b; Kosodo et al. 2004). The role of cell polarity in the determination of the mode and outcome (asymmetric vs. symmetric) of stem/progenitor cell division is described in Sect. 5.2.2.

In summary, the characterization of the asymmetric mode of cell division and its regulatory mechanisms and the investigation of lung epithelial stem cell behavior and how these stem cells control and balance their different fates have been partially uncovered in the lung. However, further research is still needed in these research areas since it will help identify novel targets to prevent and/or rescue various types of fatal or serious lung diseases. It can also help in devising novel methods for lung repair and regeneration. In addition, understanding the mechanisms of balancing proliferation/self-renewal with differentiation of stem/progenitor cells can help to develop research methods that utilize the remarkable ability of these stem cells to repair and regenerate the damaged and/or diseased lung.
